Real Madrid "s plans for next season are gathering pace with new signing defender Eder Militao hailed as the "next Pepe" by the technical staff responsible for brining him to Spain after just one season in European football".

"Real Madrid CF and FC Porto have agreed the transfer of Eder Militao and the player will sign on a six-year contract running until the 30th of June 2025", read a brief statement on the Real Madrid website.

The Brazilian only joined Porto from Sao Paulo last summer for €4 million.

The final one of his previous stint was last season's Champions League final against Liverpool, which saw him guide Real to the trophy for a third successive year.

Militao will be the first of many signings Real Madrid make this summer, after a dismal season reaffirmed the need for an overhaul on the squad that won three consecutive Champions League titles.

Militao became the first signing in the second coaching tenure of French coach Zinedine Zidane who was rehired on Monday as the capital club's manager.

Real Madrid entertain struggling Celta Vigo on Saturday on Zidane's return to the Bernabeu and he said he was "emotional to be able to return to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium".

The 21-year-old Brazilian scored 3 goals in 34 matches for Porto. "I wish the club all the best".

Zidane stood beside president Florentino Perez as he announced his resignation in Madrid on May 31, 2018.

Veteran defender Marcelo and Wales forward Gareth Bale are the most high profile names whose futures look uncertain under Zidane, while Dani Ceballos, Marco Asensio and Toni Kroos all have points to prove to their returning coach.
