Witnesses said there were rumours of the old bridge collapsing which caused panic and chaos.

According to the Mumbai Police, the foot overbridge connecting CSMT platform 1 north end with BT Lane near Times of India building collapsed during the rush hour. "Senior officers are on spot", read the tweet by Mumbai police. "The dust and cries of the victims filled us with fear and we soon realised that a bridge has fallen".

The bridge acquired the grim moniker of "Kasab bridge" in 2008 after terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Ismail Khan were seen on the structure during the 26/11 attacks. "Why was it not closed until the work was completed, it'll also be probed", he said. Both GT and St George Hospital witnessed frantic scenes as injured and dead were brought after the mishap took place. Commuters have been advised to take the alternate routes to their destinations.

A day after a bridge collapsed in Mumbai killing six people, the BMC, Mumbai's civic body, suspended two engineers and ordered a full-fledged departmental enquiry against them.

Police registered cases against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Indian Railway officials charging them with culpable homicide.

Before the signal turned green, the bridge came down along with people on it. Fire engines and an ambulance were also at the site. The removal of the collapsed bridge's steel frame began on Friday. "Action will be initiated against the responsible officials".

"I am not politicising the issue, but hollow promises are not going to serve the people anyway". Incidentally, the bridge, built in 1971, had also cleared the railway's safety audit just months earlier. "This is the failure of the government and the system", he added.

"During that audit, 354 bridges were checked for their structural soundness".

In July previous year, portion of a road over-bridge had collapsed in suburban Andheri.
