Virginia's 3rd in line for governor swears he never wore blackface

Amid the growing list of scandals rocking Virginia, with multiple politicians being urged to resign for previously dressing in blackface, it has been reported that State Senator Tommy Norment was once the editor of a college yearbook that featured racist photos and slurs.

"As one of seven working on a 359-page yearbook, I can not endorse or associate myself with every photo, entry, or word on each page", Norment wrote, adding that he did not appear in or take any of the photos in question.

The new accusation further clouds the fate of Virginia's government.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has told his staff that he doesn't intend to resign his office, his communication director, Ofirah Yheskel, told NPR member station WCVE Friday. She characterizes the alleged attack as "premeditated and aggressive".

She said she came forward with her story after she learned Fairfax might become Governor of Virginia as a result of Governor Northam's blackface yearbook photo page.

Northam said last Friday that he was in the picture.

Green said the refusal of Virginia's governor and attorney general to resign after admitting to wearing blackface "is but a symptom of a greater syndrome that now plagues our country as a result of not acting on President Trump's bigotry", the Hill reports. "Additionally, we have statements from former classmates corroborating that Ms. Watson immediately told friends that Mr. Fairfax had raped her". It shows one person in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood.

The stakes couldn't be higher with Democrats in the governor's mansion but Republicans still controlling the legislature: If Gov. Ralph Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring all resign, Republican House Speaker Kirk Cox would be in charge. Northam at first admitted he was in the picture, then denied it a day later, but acknowledged he once put shoe polish on his face to look like Michael Jackson for a dance contest in 1984. "The Democrats have sacrificed their morals and values for political expediency".

Kurtis Blow reacted negatively about Mark Herring dressing up as him in 1980 when the Virginia Attorney General was a 19-year-old college student at UVA, according to a video from TMZ.

Northam and Herring are struggling to affirm their respect for African-Americans after acknowledging they wore blackface once decades ago. "It is my hope that these regrettable actions can be turned into teachable moments".
