Trump Makes Last Appeal for Wall Funding in State of Union Address

During President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood and clapped at the commander-in-chief with a grin that caught people's attention.

Stacey Abrams, former Democratic candidate for governor in Georgia, delivered the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union on Tuesday.

Another said: "Nancy Pelosi straight up giving Trump the baby shark here", while one echoed this by captioning the picture with notes from the popular children's song. That's a decline of 3.9 million, not the 5 million that Trump talked about.

The White House sent talking points to supporters Tuesday breaking down five themes for tonight's State of the Union. In pre-speech surveys, 61% of speech-watchers said they approved of the job he was doing as President, compared with 40% in CNN's latest representative survey of all American adults.

"I am asking you to defend our very unsafe southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and to our country", he said.

Abrams identified Trump as architect of a 35-day partial government shutdown that ended last month, though a possible reprise looms in the coming weeks.

Among the lawmakers in the chamber were 100 freshmen attending their first address by the president in their new workplace.

White House aides say the president will call for bipartisanship on major legislation, but analysts expect Democrats to continue resisting his agenda.

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there can not be war and investigation". "It just doesn't work that way". "Our country is vibrant and our economy is thriving like never before".

Trump is expected to focus much of his prime-time speech on dangers at the border with Mexico.

The meme-worthy applaud came after the president's call for unity during his speech - created to call for "cooperation, compromise and the common good" instead of partisan bickering and "the politics of revenge". Things naturally took a turn to the macabre with an extended section on immigration as the president made the case for his border wall.

"And exactly one century after Congress passed the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in Congress than at any time before", Trump said, as the audience erupted.

But then, even while the president may have to win over some unconvinced voters in 2020, he also will have to hold onto his base.

There are clear signs that the showdown over the border wall has dinged the president: The most recent Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll had Trump's approval rating at a shade over 39 percent, the lowest it has been since early last October.

A video of Vladimir Putin, allegedly translated into English, showed the Russian president congratulating Trump. He pushed his party into a lengthy government shutdown over border security, only to cave to Democrats.

"There is no reason to think he wants unity".

All the while, Trump regularly blasted Democrats on his Twitter feed as unhelpful, obstructionist and unpatriotic.
