Jose Mourinho rules himself out of Benfica job

The likes of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have looked like completely different players under the Norwegian interim boss, and it will be fascinating to hear what Mourinho has to say about their dramatic upturn in form.

And it sounds like it could get even better for United should Real re-hire Mourinho, because doing so would trigger a clause in the 55-year-old's previous contract.

Mourinho's first fully-fledged job as a manager was with the Eagles where he took over from former Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes in 2000.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad was Los Blancos' sixth of the season, which saw them fall 10 points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Jose Mourinho will join beIN SPORTS, the global sports broadcaster, this week as part of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 and English Premier League coverage, which viewers across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) enjoy exclusively on the leading sports channel.

Recent reports had linked him with the Benfica job after Rui Vitoria was sacked, with club president Luis Filipe Vieira insisting "money would be no object" to a Mourinho return.

He said: "I have never been into the game of feeding news stories, but I have no intention of working in Portugal".

"It's a tremendous honour when you return to a club where you've been, but I'm talking to you and I will not talk to anyone else".

Speculation is rife over the Real job at the moment, with Santiago Solari struggling for positive results in the wake of Julen Lopetegui's departure in October.

"I don't really want to go there but the best way to respect a great club [Benfica] and a great president is to say that I was not approached".

The Daily Mail reports that a source close to Mourinho - whose contract was due to run till the end of the 2019/20 campaign with the option of an extra season -revealed that compensation had been paid.

Since the ex Chelsea coach was dismissed at Manchester United, he has been linked with many top European clubs.
