How flight delays in the Northeast are affecting DFW Airport

Air traffic was being delayed at LaGuardia airport in New York, Philadelphia worldwide airport and Newark Liberty global airport in New Jersey, according to the FAA's website.

The FAA said in a statement that there's been a "slight increase in sick leave at two air traffic control facilities affecting NY and Florida".

At least five flights from New York-area airports to Jacksonville Interntional Airport showed delays.

"Southwest is now monitoring today's (air traffic control) programs, and we are experiencing some flight delay", Southwest spokesman Brian Parrish said in an email. Martin said safety is being maintained during a period of "minimal impacts" on travel.

This came as the partial government shutdown hit its 35th day, which also was the second missed payday for government workers. Fees and charges paid by aircraft operators provide a reliable revenue stream; so reliable that larger air traffic control companies like those of Canada and the United Kingdom issue investment-grade revenue bonds to pay for modernizing their technology and facilities-something the FAA can only dream about. On Friday morning, an American Airlines flight out of Monroe, Louisiana bound for Dallas with 26 passengers was cancelled due to a TSA officer shortage in Monroe, according to an airline's spokesperson.

President Donald Trump (left) initiated the shutdown until congress acquiesces to his $5.7 billion border security plan.

"In this spirit, we urge that the federal government be reopened before shutdown impacts begin to escalate". Earlier on Friday, before the FAA took the action, NY governor Andrew Cuomo issued an open letter to Trump urging him to reopen the airport, citing security fears at airports.

Travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International, Philadelphia and LaGuardia airports are encountering flight delays Friday due to staffing issues on the ground from workers calling out sick, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted that the shutdown was "pushing our airspace to the breaking point". Officials said staffing levels at the airports were "fine".

Staffing problems at air traffic control centers in Florida and Washington, D.C., were causing delays Friday at several airports, including Orlando International - and it all may be related the the partial government shutdown.

Speaking at the White House on Friday, he described federal workers affected by the shutdown as "incredible patriots".

If you are coming to the airport to catch a flight or to pick someone up, you're asked to check the flight status first. Gilbert said her union and others have been predicting that the inevitable result of the shutdown would be air travel disruptions and she suggested it will get worse.
