A body has been found in the hunt for missing British backpacker Grace Millane in New Zealand as police confirmed they will charge a 26-year-old man with her murder.

After visiting Peru, she arrived alone in New Zealand last month and had been in touch with family and friends almost daily until her disappearance.

Her father David has described her as a "lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter" who had been in regular contact before she disappeared.

Ms Millane was on the second leg of a year-long trip around the world after graduating university.

A 26-year-old man now being held by police is to be charged with killing Miss Millane, 22, from Essex.

"The evidence we have located so far, our scene examination, some of the CCTV footage we have, and our investigation has determined that Grace is no longer alive and this is a murder investigation", Mr Beard said. "It is an unbearable time for the Millane family and our hearts go out to them".

Grace Millane, who was travelling the world after finishing university, went missing on December 1 in Auckland.

Police said Sunday they are conducting a full scene examination of an area in Henderson, West Auckland.

Police said the man would be held in custody until his first court appearance on Monday.

Police said her family were "devastated" after being told the missing persons case had become a murder investigation.

She had booked to stay at the Base Backpackers hostel in central Auckland until 8 December.

After arriving in New Zealand on Friday, David Millane spoke with media.

After visiting Peru, she arrived alone in New Zealand last month and had been in touch with family and friends almost daily until her disappearance.

Several vehicles, including marked police cars, were parked up at the side of the road.

"We are all extremely upset, and it's very hard at this time to fully describe the range of emotions we are going through".
