Trump said raking prevents forest fires in Finland; Finns baffled and bemused

Some took a more creative approach to the task, employing more efficiency to cleaning the forest floor.

Finland's President Sauli Niinistö said the topic of raking never came up in their conversation.

'And they don't have any problem. "And when they do, it's a very small problem".

Finnish people, including their president, were baffled after U.S. President Donald Trump said wildfires weren't a problem in Finland because crews there "spend a lot of time on raking".

Democrats were quick to point out that managing forest fires was a complex issue - and that raking isn't going to solve it.

Trump also told Fox News' Chris Wallace last week that raking could have prevented the fires. "Very important", said Mr. Trump.

Finns woke up to find their country was trending on social media and the comment has inspired them to demonstrate their forest "raking and cleaning" abilities on Twitter.

Speaking from the scene of the devastation on Saturday, the President refused to acknowledge environmental and climate factors, instead telling reporters of how they deal with fires in Finland. "They don't really rake the forests in Finland".

"They're raking trees, little trees like this - nut trees, little bushes, that you could see are totally dry, weeds".

Strong winds were still complicating efforts to contain the deadliest forest fires in California's history as the death toll rose to 76 with nearly 1,300 unaccounted for. "You wouldn't have the fire".
