Suns buyout Tyson Chandler’s contract

Back when he was voted Defensive Player of the Year in 2011-12, his first season with the New York Knicks, Chandler was one of the league's better rim protectors despite blocking relatively few shots.

Chandler, a native of Los Angeles, has been with the Suns since 2015. No offense to either of these players, but the Lakers' defense suffers when they are in the lineup.

Chandler will be a backup to starting center JaVale McGee.

Tyson Chandler has agreed to a buyout with the Phoenix Suns and plans to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It looks like Tyson Chandler will soon be a free agent. He's a highly intelligent player who is very good at what he does.

In certain timeout situations, Luke Walton may be able to turn to Tyson Chandler for some help in how to improve in defensive situations, which points to the pedigree of Chandler and all that he has been through in this league.

Even if Chandler only gets around 15 minutes a night and only averages five points and five rebounds a night, his value extends beyond the stat sheet. Also, adding him will greatly reduce the amount of minutes McGee plays, helping him stay fresh throughout the rest of the season. And he's appeared in 1,086 games, which is 10th most among all active National Basketball Association players.

There are various reasons why a move like this had to happen NOW for the Lakers. He's seen minimal time off the bench through seven games this year. If, however, the Lakers consider the position fixed with the addition of Chandler, they may regret that decision.
