It should have been a special week for America's youngest elected member of Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez addressed the protesters, who were holding signs asking for a "Green New Deal" from Democrats in charge, and demanding "Green Jobs for All", shook hands, and gave high-fives to the 50 or so protesters who blocked the entrance to Pelosi's office.
Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter and said, "If I walked into Congress wearing a sack, they would laugh & take a picture of my backside". Dark hates light - that's why you tune it out.
Many women, especially women of color, can relate to how their actions are scrutinized in ways that men are not, and we celebrate Ocasio-Cortez's message to "shine bright and keep it pushing".
In a subsequent tweet, she called for Scarry to apologize.
In a tweet Saturday, the progressive Democrat wondered why Columbus Day is a federal holiday while Election Day, when we engage in perhaps our most important civic duty, is not.
Mr Scarry's tweet drew thousands of responses, with social media users across the political spectrum quick to react. Scarry fired back at both critics on Twitter.

I don't think leftist nutcases should be drafting any kind of legislation at all, but that's just me. You gotta wonder if she knows the difference between Scotch, bourbon and whiskey.
After deleting the tweet, Mr Scarry said it had been misconstrued.
"ATTN! I posted a tweet earlier suggesting the incoming congresswoman looked well put together - ELEGANT even - despite suggestions she's struggled". He eventually deleted the tweet.
Her 780,000 followers find her refreshing and real, unlike other politicians.
"Haha, look at the dumb progressive who doesn't understand how government works" is easy content, but conservatives shouldn't write off Ocasio-Cortez as a joke.
Aside from being called a "girl", the 29-year-old complained on her own Twitter account that she was being given unsolicited directions to the "spouse and intern events instead of the ones for members of Congress". This is what happens when you're a young WOC in Congress - but it shouldn't. "That's really what we need to do to save this country". Let's work to make this the new normal.
