Gillum, who received heavy celebrity support in his campaign, remains as Tallahassee mayor, and noted, "the fight for Florida continues", but did not specify his next moves. "We know that this fight continues".
"R. Jai and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida", Gillum said in a Facebook video in which he appeared alongside his wife.
Gillum's announcement came hours after the U.S. president, Donald Trump, said on Twitter that Gillum will be a "strong Democrat warrior" and a "force to reckon with". DeSantis' margin was above the 0.25 percentage points required for a manual recount, notes NPR. More than 8 million voters cast ballots in the race.
But he later withdrew that concession when the results showed the two were close enough to trigger an automatic recount. "Now it's time to bring Florida together".
That recount has become the subject of an intense political battle with Republicans including Trump claiming without evidence that the process was marred by fraud. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel posted video Saturday of Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes saying that 2,040 ballots had been "misfiled".
'We have been trying to determine what could have caused the drop.
A South Florida elections official says that her office has misplaced more than 2,000 ballots.
Nelson and Democrats filed several lawsuits following the close election, challenging everything from the state's signature mismatch law to deadlines for mail-in ballots. There would be nowhere else for them to be.
Counties have until noon on Sunday to report official results to the U.S. Department of State.
A recount is continuing in the race between Nelson and his challenger for the Senate seat, outgoing Republican Governor Rick Scott.
