Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 introduced with no notch and sliding front cameras

Here's the whole phone when closed. Sliding mechanisms have been used in phones before, but Xiaomi is replying it as a solution to a new problem. The quest to maximize smartphone screen space has created all sorts of unusual compromises in the design of slab phones. You'll find two more 12 MP cameras on the rear, bringing the total up to four.

So, the hidden front camera leaves a lot of room for the screen to take over. It's good to see Xiaomi has finally solved the selfie camera conundrum by housing it in the sliding camera module.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched a new smartphone in its home country today. The screen is rectangular with no blemishes or interruptions. Well, the idea seems to be to eliminate the notch, and remove the extra bezel to create a phone that is completely edge-to-edge.

Mi MIX 3 achieves a screen-to-body ratio of 93.4 percent, one step further compared with the "three-side bezel-less" screen of Mi MIX 2. For the Mi Mix 3, Xiaomi has switched to using an AMOLED display. The 24-megapixel camera comes with Super Pixel low-light technology, while the secondary 2-megapixel sensor is actually a DOF camera. It is a magnetic unit that slides up on the top of the device. Here the slider needs to be started by hand, but after the initial push it becomes magnetically assisted. The new Mi Mix 3 model has arrived barely seven months after the launch of its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. The system has a life expectancy of 300,000 cycles, at least in lab testing.

"Mi MIX 3's patented slider incorporates neodymium magnets that have been carefully calibrated", stated Xiaomi in its announcement. The device's rear-facing cameras are accessible at all times, and you don't need to utilize the sliding mechanism in order to access them. That being said, the slider can also be customized to answering calls or open different apps with it and many more. The base phone with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage will sell for 3,299 yuan ($475), Stepping up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will cost 3,999 yuan ($575).

The phone supports wireless charging, but unlike every other phone that does so, it also comes with a 10W wireless charger in the box. But it does not have the 3.5mm headphone jack. Like the first Mi Mix, rather than a glass back panel, Xiaomi is using ceramic.

Prices for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will range from 3,299 CNY ($474 USD) to $4,999 ($720 USD). At the launch event, Xiaomi has confirmed that the 5G version of the Mi MIX 3 will be launched in early 2019 (probably with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC).
