Winning numbers for record $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot

The numbers drawn Tuesday night were 5, 28, 62, 65 and 70, and the Mega Ball was 5.

"This is truly a historic occasion".

Unlike many other state lotteries, including North Carolina's, SC does not identify winners of lottery games.

Today's Powerball lottery prize stands at $620m, making it the fifth-largest jackpot in United States history, after no one got all six numbers in Saturday's drawing. Mega Millions officials had earlier estimated that Tuesday night's prize would reach $1.6 billion, but the total wasn't finalized until after sales stopped shortly before the drawing. And the wait is on for the nation's newest millionaire.

Tickets had to match all five white balls and the yellow Mega Ball to claim total victory.

Nothing could be finer for someone in SC.

But lottery officials say 8 tickets were sold in California that matched 5 of the 6 numbers needed to win. If you do, you may want to catch up with them, or at least see if they bought any Mega Millions tickets.

"I didn't win the lottery, but I'm still planning on dying alone", TV host and comedian Conan O'Brien said.

As of 12:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the Mega Millions website still said it was pending if anyone had won the jackpot, and what the next jackpot amount would be for Friday's drawing.

The last winners were a group of 11 co-workers who split an eyewatering $543million jackpot between them.

The games are played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., and the US Virgin Islands.

Since Mega Millions changed the jackpot rules in October 2017, we can expect a better chance that the jackpots will get bigger and bigger and break more records over time. That was $656 million shared by winners in three states in March 2012.

The previous record was a $1.586 billion jackpot for a Powerball drawing in 2016. Not too shabby, either.

Powerball has climbed since there was a victor in NY on August 11.

The previous record for the largest USA lottery prize was a $1.586bn (£1.226bn) jackpot for a Powerball draw in 2016.
