The award merged with FIFA's World Player of the Year prize from 2010-15 to create the FIFA Ballon d'Or, but returned to France Football in 2016 while FIFA established The Best awards. Although Manchester United keeper David de Gea seems to have not been chosen in the shortlist for the footballing award.

Mbappe scored 21 goals for Paris Saint-Germain last season before starring in France's triumphant Russian Federation 2018 campaign, netting three times on their way to the final and then again in the 4-2 win over Croatia that sealed their second World Cup triumph.

Earlier this week, the 30 man list for 2018's Ballon d'Or was released.

The victor of the prestigious award organised by France Football magazine will be announced on December 3.

The 30-man list, which includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and FIFA's "The Best Men's Player" Luka Modric was announced by France Football on Monday.

Real Madrid midfielder Isco, Liverpool's Brazilian Roberto Firmino and Uruguay's rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

In another first, the best under-21 player will receive the Kopa Trophy.

The first five Ballon d'Or nominees have been named and a number of Premier League players feature prominently on the list.
