The numbers drawn are 65-53-23-15-70 and the Mega Ball was 7.

The ticket sold at the Korner Kwik Stop, 10481 Highway 97, was one of six winning tickets sold for Friday night's drawing and is worth $38,558.

It is the second-largest jackpot for any lottery game played in the United States, behind the January 13, 2016, Powerball that had a $1,586,400,000 jackpot.

Mega Millions also made it easier to win across its nine game levels. The last time anyone hit the Mega Millions jackpot was back in July when a group of 11 workers in California took home $543 million.

Mega Millions is played in 44 USA states as well as Washington DC and the Virgin Islands.

"We passed the jackpot sign and saw the '6-5-4, ' " Lucas told lottery officials after claiming his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh Tuesday, according to an NC Education Lottery news release.

Tickets for both Mega Millions and Powerball are sold in Kansas everywhere Kansas Lottery tickets are sold. "It's always a thrill to have both jackpots rolling, but there's an extra spark now with Mega Millions reaching a new record", he added to ABC News. The average Mega Millions purchase on Friday remained about $6, or three plays per ticket.

So why do the jackpots keep growing to such astronomical figures?

Don't count on making a deposit for anywhere close to $1.6 billion if you win the Tuesday night drawing, though.

In the middle of the 20th century, when lotteries first started in the USA, they were sold to states as a way to benefit the American public.

The Mega Millions jackpot is now bigger than ever before. The Powerball pot is $430 million, and the top Mega Millions prize is a cool Dr. Evil-approved $1 billion.

Depending on how many winning tickets appear on Friday, that individual record is in jeopardy.

Tickets cost $2, which seems like a relatively small price to pay for a chance at becoming rich.
