Palestinian stabs American father of 4 to death in West Bank

Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for the Gaza health ministry, said yesterday that the ministry stood by its statement that the boy was killed by Israeli fire and that an autopsy would confirm further details.

The ministry removed a baby from their official death toll in May after The Associated Press reported she died from a preexisting medical condition, not from Israeli tear gas as it had claimed. Israel captured those territories in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed East Jerusalem in a move not recognized internationally. "This Friday was his destiny to die as a martyr", said the boy's father, Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Al.

Erekat, who also serves as the chief Palestinian negotiator, said that the US has already accepted Israel's position on the main issues of the conflict, including Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the status of West Bank settlements and the question of Palestinian refugees.

Another Palestinian, 28-year-old Hashem Hassan, said he saw Abdel-Al being shot 70 meters from the fence: "He threw a few stones, which flew just a few yards".

Some protesters hurled two grenades at a military vehicle in the northern Gaza Strip and a number of explosive devices at IDF troops.

US officials have also been non-committal about whether the plan would endorse the creation of a Palestinian state, as the Palestinians have long demanded.

Since March 30, Gaza has also seen shelling exchanges between the coastal enclave's Hamas rulers and Israel.

Frank Romano, 66, is being held at a lockup in Jerusalem and is to appear before an Israeli military court Monday, said attorney Gaby Lasky. There was no word of casualties.

The protest campaign calls for an end to the 11-year Israeli blockade on Gaza and for Palestinian refugees' right of return to the lands that their families fled during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.

The reopening follows several days of relative calm, as Egyptian and United Nations officials attempt to broker a long-term truce between Israel and Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas.

"Today is the deadline" for closure, Husam Zomlot, who headed the Palestine Liberation Organization mission, said in a Facebook video addressed to "the great people of America".
