NVIDIA's new RTX technology powers ray traced Porsche


To that end, Nvidia also introduced three new Quadro RTX graphics cards featuring up to 48GB of GDDR6 memory, 4,608 CUDA Cores and 576 Tensor Cores built upon the Turing architecture.

The new GPU architecture introduces RT Cores created to accelerate ray tracing, a technique in graphics rendering that traces the path of light in the scene so that objects are shaded correctly, light reflects naturally, and shadows fall in their correct locations.

Turing can perform real-time ray tracing operations 25 times faster than Nvidia's previous Pascal line of GPUs, thanks to the new architecture's RT Cores.

Moments ago at NVIDIA's SIGGRAPH 2018 keynote presentation, company CEO Jensen Huang formally unveiled the company's much awaited (and much rumored) Turing GPU architecture.

Graphics card titan Nvidia has revealed the next generation of their graphics architecture, codenamed Turing. 'Hybrid rendering will change the industry, opening up awesome possibilities that enhance our lives with more attractive designs, richer entertainment and more interactive experiences.

Ray tracing is what makes shadows and light render more realistically in a computer-generated scene but it's a hard effect to obtain in real-time as it requires substantial computing power.

At the core of the Turing architecture are what NVIDIA is referring these as two "engines"- one for accelerating Ray Tracing, and the other for accelerating AI Inferencing.

NVIDIA also announced a new reference design called the Quadro RTX Server, a type of GPU designed specifically for use in data centers and server farms. "While GeForce gaming cards were not launched Monday night, we do expect gaming cards featuring Turing to be launched shortly".

"We now have a brand new software stack for computer graphics merging rastering and ray tracing, computing and AI", Huang said.

Interested developers can access AI, simulation, and ray tracing SDKs on the RTX platform here. In fact, Nvidia says it can achieve 10 GigaRays a second at peak.

In addition to the RT Cores dedicated to ray tracing, Turing also relies on Tensor Cores to accelerate artificial intelligence.

New and enhanced technologies to improve performance of VR applications, including Variable Rate Shading, Multi-View Rendering and VRWorks Audio. These include DLAA - deep learning anti-aliasing, which is a breakthrough in high-quality motion image generation - denoising, resolution scaling and video re-timing.

"Turing is about to turn the graphics industry on its head".

The new Quadro cards will be available starting in this year's fourth quarter.
