Jose Mourinho confirms Manchester United's captain for the season

"Young guy but good personality, made in academy, normally starting, has conditions to be captain in the future, and in the continuity of this he was the captain and he will be the captain again but when Antonio comes back he will be the captain", Mourinho concluded about Pogba.

Pogba will remain captain for the Brighton game, although Mourinho explained that Antonio Valencia will reclaim the armband when he returns to action following a calf injury.

United beat Leicester 2-1 at Old Trafford a week ago, Pogba opening the scoring from an early penalty and putting in a man of the match performance for his club.

Asked to clarify Pogba's comments, Mourinho advised reporters to "ask him", and said the only player fined during his tenure at the club was Anthony Martial.

"The truth is that we've been together for two years and I can't ask anymore from him".

"You can be a rich club and buy the best players in the world but you cannot buy class and they showed that clearly, that was really obvious".

But Mourinho goes into Sunday's match at Brighton stressing: "Would I swap De Gea for anyone? No".

"They know how to play, they kept the same team, bought a few new players, the style is the same and the fact they lost the first match [against Watford] they are working for a reaction, to improve their game".

Asked specifically about Pogba's claim regarding being fined, Mourinho said: "I don't care".

"He's working extremely well here, but I have to say in his defence that write what you want about him, write what you want about me, please don't say lies".

"He never had a fight with me, we never had a hard change of words, everything is respected".

"They can replace Mourinho with another very good manger, there are plenty out there, and that's the unfortunate position we're in".

"You have to ask Paul [what he meant]", Mourinho added.

"He likes it here, we love him, we want him to stay, he wants to stay, so when a player is not in the market the value is zero. I don't know", he said.

I don't think there was a standout person to be captain in that team, I just that that was ideal for him hopefully he can keep that. 'And when Matic is back, of course he is an unbelievable player.

"Juventus remains the team to beat and therefore we can say that they are the number one contender for the title".
