How Ohio State alum on Giants processed Urban Meyer shocker

The OSU coach is on administrative leave while Ohio State investigates claims that Meyer's wife knew about 2015 allegations of abuse against former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith, who was sacked last week.

On July 24, Urban Meyer denied knowing that Zach Smith had been accused of domestic violence in 2015, saying at Big Ten media days, "I was never told about anything".

In an interview with McMurphy, Courtney reportedly said she and Shelley regularly talked about Zach's abuse in 2015.

Courtney Smith provided screen shots of text message conversations with several women married to men on the coaching staff, which she says indicate that Meyer was aware of the problem.

Urban Meyer's tenure as Bob Evans' "head breakfast coach" lasted just three days as the New Albany-based chain restaurant pulled the Ohio State Buckeyes coach from its website on Thursday. Ryan Day, who has been the team's offensive coordinator, will be acting head football coach while Meyer is on leave.

When Meyer was asked about the protection order filed against Smith, the coach said the firing decision had "a little bit" to do with that and that it was a "group effort" to come to that decision.

Zach Smith was charged in May with misdemeanor criminal trespass. Shelley is also an Ohio State employee as a registered nurse. If we're to believe what Urban Meyer said last week, his wife kept quiet about the whole affair, not even bothering to mention at the dinner table, "Hey, you've got an assistant coach who might have a problem". The season starts September 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus.

The questions confronting Meyer involve whether he vouched too strongly for a coach he's considered family.

The crux of what investigators will be looking for is whether Meyer followed proper protocols when and if he received information about allegations regarding Smith. In 2009, Smith was arrested on a charge that Courtney Smith later dropped.

No matter what is proven about these allegations against the former wide receiver coach at Ohio State, this much is beyond doubt: Urban Meyer did not commit a crime, he did not witness, nor did he cover up any crimes. He pleaded not guilty, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday. Those photos show bruises, cuts and marks on Courtney Smith. "I don't know. Someone texted me that last night". I told people to go find out for me. The lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss say Ohio State facilitated the abuse by ignoring complaints.
