Trump Talks with Mexico’s President-Elect on Border, NAFTA

Trump shared a 30-minute phone call with Obrador, during which the two discussed trade, border security, and the possibility of a bilateral Mexico-U.S. trade deal.

Along with his post, Sanders shared an article which calls Lopez Obrador "Mexico's 'Bernie Sanders'" and describes him as "anti-Trump". That is what we always want to maintain with the USA government, that there be mutual respect. "I told him a number of years ago when I saw him campaigning for a different race, frankly, a different year, a different race, I said he'll be someday he's going to be the President of Mexico". At the same time, he also hopes to persuade Trump to help develop Mexico and Central America in order to contain illegal migration. We need to delay until after the midterm elections.

Even in recent months, despite a surge of politician killings, Lopez Obrador has ventured into drug-cartel strongholds rarely visited by Pena Nieto, such as Chilapa and Reynosa.

In the past, Lopez Obrador has offered criticism to the shift in United States stance on immigration and trade.

But Lopez Obrador's new status may compel him to make some compromises, said Vicente Sanchez, a professor of public administration at the Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana. He says he will seek to form new trade relationships around the world, thus reducing Mexico's dependence on the US.

To some degree the election has become a referendum on Mexico's political elite and its economic direction, as well as the tenure of the current president, Enrique Peña Nieto, who is limited to a single six-year term. A prominent exit poll predicted his party allies were poised to score big victories in congressional races, possibly winning absolute majorities in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. According to a September 2017 Pew poll, some 65 percent of Mexican respondents saw the USA unfavourably (up from 29 percent); 93 percent had no confidence in the U.S. president doing "the right thing regarding world affairs". "We have unbelievably bad border laws, immigration laws, the weakest in the world, laughed at by everybody in the world", Mr. Trump said.

Mexico's next president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, supports ideas such as creating a fiscal committee for prudent economic management, reforms of pensions and cost-cutting at state-owned oil firm Pemex, a senior aide told Reuters. "I desire with all my soul to raise the greatness of our country on high".

"We are going to achieve a peaceful transformation, without violence", Obrador said. "The changes will be profound, but in accordance with established order". Ricardo Anaya of the centre-right PAN was a distant second at 22.6% and Jose Antonio Meade of the centre-left ruling PRI party at 15.6%. Canada has retaliated with $16.6 billion in counter-tariffs and the USA midterm elections are in the fall.

"There will be no confiscation or expropriation of assets. Eradicating corruption will be the principal mission", he said.

President Nieto, who took office in 2012, continued this trend, going out of his way to please his American counterparts. During this conversation, they "reaffirmed the close friendship" and agreed to continue working toward a mutually beneficial outcome on the trade agreement, a read out of the conversation from the Prime Minister's Office said. And rather than the use of force to fight spiraling violence, he will look to fix root causes such as inequality and poverty.
