Asked whether the USA maximum-pressure campaign against North Korea would continue, Sanders said US policy had not changed and Washington continued to maintain tough sanctions on Pyongyang.

The White House has been tight-lipped about Trump's preparations for the summit.

The summit between the two leaders will be held on June 12 in Singapore.

The debate over USFK's future role arose after Trump indicated Friday that he had talked about the issue of the USFK during his meeting with Kim Yong-chol, the highest-ranking North Korea official to visit the U.S. in 18 years. The Russian leader said Moscow has "big hopes" for the success of the meeting set for June 12.

Among the demands Democrats made in the letter are that any agreement continue North Korea's "current ballistic missile tests suspension, including any space launch", the full "dismantlement of ballistic missiles and a prohibition on all ballistic missile development", and a guarantee "that no ballistic missiles and associated technology are proliferated or exported".

"We have sanctions on, they are very powerful and we would not take those sanctions off unless North Korea denuclearised", she said.

Trump and Kim Jong Un are planning to meet in Singapore.
