After months of speculation and competition with Morocco's bid, the joint "United 2026" bid of U.S., Canada and Mexico was awarded Wednesday with the hosting rights to the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026.
Herdman, meanwhile, says hosting the event will be a "game changer" for Canadian soccer.
In 2010, the US was a finalist to host the 2020 World Cup but lost to Qatar in a vote that was later discredited - but not reversed - because of widespread corruption in FIFA's ranks. U.S. will regroup in the coming years and attempt to clinch a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before turning its attention to home pursuits. It was a veiled threat to withhold US support from countries opposing the bid.
"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the Fifa World Cup in 2026", said an emotional Carlos Cordeiro, the president of the USA soccer federation, on the eve of this summer's tournament in Russia. "Together-in partnership with our Candidate Host Cities, the Member Associations, and FIFA-we will use this platform to unite the world around football and help create a new and sustainable blueprint for the future of FIFA World Cups™". Morocco had been a late entrant to the 2026 race and its projected profits were half of the United States bid.
The 1994 World Cup in the United States set an attendance record that still stands, with almost 3.6 million spectators for only 52 matches. The North American bid projects US$14.3 billion in revenue compared to $7.2 billion for Morocco.

But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined. Moroccan officials focused on President Donald Trump, citing his immigration policies, and American gun violence.
The United bid plans to use 16 stadiums from a list of 23 - 17 of which are deemed just fine the way they are, with six needing renovation.
FIFA's World Cup soccer is coming to Canada, but Vancouver is not among the host cities after B.C. backed out of the bid for the games earlier this year.
Morocco FA president Fouzi Lekjaa said: "I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country, Morocco, to continue to work for football, to work for the youth and also to realise some day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco". Then the remaining four teams will play, with the winners securing the final two spots in the tournament. "Our country is ready to host the FIFA World Cup, and provide everyone who will come to Russian Federation with maximum comfort and the best emotions possible", he said.
Los Angeles is practically a lock to be a World Cup host city, and while the Inglewood stadium will be newer, the 92,000-seat Rose Bowl is the stadium in consideration.
