Cops: Tennessee Grandma Put Kids in Kennels in Trunk

A Memphis grandmother has been arrested after a video went viral which appeared to show her releasing two children from animal cages in the back of her vehicle.

According to the Daily Mail, the children-aged seven and eight-were told by Cheeks that there wasn't enough room in the back seat of the SUV for them to sit safely.

With temperatures reaching the 95-degree mark, the 7 and 8-year-old told officers they were hot since there were no vents in the back of the vehicle.

Leimome Cheeks 62, was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment, WREG reports.

"It's very sad. Because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot", said Nikita Blake who is Cheeks neighbor.

A police affidavit cited by the Commercial Appeal cited a similar statement from Cheeks, who reportedly said "there was no room inside the vehicle earlier in the day".

"I really can't see her doing that", she added.

The two children involved are now being questioned by the police, who told them that Mrs Cheeks claimed there was not enough space in the truck for them to sit safely.

She also drove to downtown Memphis, telling police she made stops to check on them periodically. "She's such a nice lady", a neighbor told WREG-TV.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake. It's a huge mistake, get some help yeah but put her in jail, it's hard to say", Blake said. Court records show an arraignment scheduled for Monday has been continued until July 9, when she will tell a judge if she has hired a lawyer of if the court will need to appoint one. Police said the vehicle was not air conditioned.
