YouTube launches new music streaming service to take on Spotify

There is both an ad-supported free tier and a $9.99-per-month package called YouTube Music Premium. Depending on how much information users share with the service, it will make recommendations based on time of day and predictive behavior - i.e.it will not recommend video content if it knows the listener is at work. With the new standalone music service in place, the YouTube Red will be rebranded to YouTube Premium.

YouTube Premium is rolling out in the existing markets with Red - the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea, where existing subscribers can continue to pay the old price of United States dollars 9.99 per month. For ad-free music and downloads, you will need to subscribe to YouTube Music Premium. YouTube Music is a new music streaming service made for music: official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio plus YouTube's tremendous catalog of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that you can't find anywhere else - all simply organized and personalized.

The announcement follows the company's recent updated charts and the recent addition of songwriter, label and publisher credits to music on YouTube.

YouTube today announced in its official blog that YouTube Music, a new music streaming service will be coming on May 22nd while YouTube red will be replaced by Premium service that will cost you a bit more. If you're at the gym for example, it will suggest various workout playlists. However, if you want the complete ad-free YouTube experience, you'll have to spring for the YouTube Premium subscription. YouTube Premium includes ad-free, background and offline across all of YouTube, as well as access to all YouTube Originals including Cobra Kai, Step Up: High Water and Youth & Consequences.

Search options are also being upgraded with the arrival of the new YouTube Music - users will be able to search for lyrics or even type in vague descriptions of tracks to get to what they want to listen to. It will be expanded to some other countries in the following weeks.

Perhaps this move will allow Google Executives to gauge the worth of its video streaming and music platform separately. In a briefing this week, the company promised it will be closing gaps between the two services over the next month, so Google Play Music members don't lose the features they've grown accustomed to, including a cloud-based MP3 storage locker.
