Gina Haspel's Testimony About CIA Torture Raises New Questions

Cheney also said that despite the 2015 congress vote to ban the use of torture, thus preventing the government from using interrogation techniques like waterboarding, that he believes they are the most effective means of gathering intelligence. After McCain criticzed Mr. Trump in October - months after McCain's diagnosis - Mr. Trump said "people have to be careful because at some point I fight back".

Last month, Amnesty published a 32-page report on the CIA's torture programme and Gina Haspel's nomination.

'CIA has learned some tough lessons, ' Haspel said, explaining that in retrospect the agency was not prepared to conduct the detention and interrogation program employed after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by al Qaeda militants.

McCain said he would oppose the nomination of Haspel over her comments on the USA enhanced interrogation program, stating "her role in overseeing the use of torture is disturbing", and "her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying".

Manchin issued his statement shortly after attending Haspel's confirmation hearing as a member of the Senate intelligence committee. "You could learn a lot about courage, character, humility and empathy from John McCain.", yet another tweet went on to read.

Haspel already has the strong support of many Republicans. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has said he expects Haspel will be confirmed.

'I do not believe the president would ask me to do that, ' Haspel said, but did not say that she would refuse.

Kelly Sadler was discussing McCain's opposition to Trump's pick for Central Intelligence Agency director, Gina Haspel, when she made the comment, according to the two people, who described feeling shocked and stunned by the remark.

The senator said in part: 'Like many Americans, I understand the urgency that drove the decision to resort to so-called enhanced interrogation methods after our country was attacked. "Any Democrat who claims to support women's empowerment and our national security but opposes her nomination is a total hypocrite".

He says the methods the USA employs to keep the nation safe must be as right and just as the values that Americans aspire to live up to and promote in the world. McCain noted: "Ms. Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing". "Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying".

He added, "The Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination".

Trump ridiculed McCain's capture, saying he wasn't a war hero because he was captured.

On one side of the ledger is the sheer fact of Haspel's qualifications for the job by virtue of her experience in the agency.
