BioWare Wants to Solve the Problem of Multiplayer Storytelling in 'Anthem'

Jorgensen affirmed that it will offer players something entirely new and unique.

"There were, understandably, some questions and concerns about story in multiplayer", he said.

Whether "unique" pertains to Battlefield 5 featuring battle royale as rumored or the prone mechanic wasn't noted. Wilson teased that that game will be "stunning and ambitious" and will have an "epic and attractive environment that constantly evolves around players". Anthem will also be designed around player input.

The news came as part of an investors call whereby company chief Andrew Wilson ventured a few additional thoughts on the upcoming online RPG by Bioware. No dates have been confirmed for these beta tests just yet, but now that we know the game is aiming for a March 2019 release, fans may not have long to wait until they can play Anthem for themselves. With microtransactions nearly certainly finding their way into games like Anthem and the upcoming Battlefield title, EA puts less emphasis on total game sales than it did in the past - instead, cultivating a community of players into recurrent spenders now drives revenue.

[Anthem] will be shipped in the last quarter of the year and in the last month of that quarter.
We also have teams envisioning future BioWare games, and they're designing approaches that are different from Anthem-including one that's very Dragon Age. The Sims and EA Sports franchises also saw impressive engagement numbers with 80 million and 90 million players, respectively. "It is fast, dangerous, attractive and unexpected", EA's Patrick Soderlund said at EA Play in June.

Fiscal year 2017-18 was a good year for The Sims too: there are now over 80 million Sims players across PC and mobile as of fiscal year end.

Digital net bookings (net amount of products and services sold digitally or sold-in physically in the period) was $3.538 billion for fiscal 2018, up 17% year-over-year and represents 68% of total net bookings. Therefore, EA will be able to calculate the IP's revenue in their earnings report.
