Eight Cameroon athletes go missing at Commonwealth Games

Of those 100 athletes, 45 tried to stay in Australia, including athletes from Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Tanzania and Cameroon.

"The authorities are very disappointed with the deserters - some did not even compete", press attache Simon Molombe said.

In January, Australia's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton warned athletes who were planning to attend the games they needed to follow the country's laws.

"Those issues are not a matter for me, we are running a sporting event, what we are simply saying is that we are encouraging people to stick within the visas issued by the Federal Government".

Australian Esther Qin, who along with Georgia Sheehan won the gold medal in the women's three-meter springbroad synchronized diving event, says she was more affected by the outdoor pool than the numerous technical difficulties.

In 2012, seven athletes from Cameroon were reported missing from the London Olympic Games.

And a Cameroon team official told news.com.au eight of the team's 24 athletes were now missing from their respective rooms in the Athlete's Village.

Cameroon weightlifters Francois Etoundi and Simplice Ribouem both received refugee status, and were in the 2018 Australian team.

Gold Coast organising committee chairman Peter Beattie said he wasn't surprised and it was something that happened at other games.
