Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Redmi 4: Should you upgrade?


The units sold in India will be locally made under Xiaomi's Make in India commitment, Xiaomi said.

Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi could be launching Redmi 5 in India today (14 March) at 3 pm.

Redmi 5 has been launched in India by Xiaomi. And as the name suggests, the Redmi 5 will be the successor to the popular Redmi 4 smartphone launched in India past year.

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 with a choice of 2GB or 3GB of RAM with 16GB or 32GB storage, respectively. The base variant has 2GB RAM and 16GB storage space priced at Rs. 7,999.

For photography, Redmi 5 sports a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 will available starting next week in blue, pink, gold, black and a lake blue colour. The Redmi 5 has the dual pyrolytic sheet that is optimized for heat dissipation in the Indian environmental conditions. Xiaomi nicknamed its latest smartphone as the same referring to its premium features. The secondary camera is a 5-megapixel shooter with face recognition and Smart Beauty 3.0 app.

The Chinese smartphone maker has issued a statement saying, "In order to restrict reselling, we have chose to remove COD payment option for the upcoming sales of Redmi Note 5 Pro on mi.com and Flipkart (Only for initial few sales)". Interestingly, while Amazon is displaying all the 3 variants, the 64GB version is missing from Mi's own website. The Redmi 5 will be available at Mi.com, Mi Homes and Amazon India, along with designated offline retailers. This is the same smartphone Xiaomi launched back in December 2017 in China with powerful hardware for a budget device.

Reliance Jio is providing an instant cashback of Rs. 2,200 for the customers of Redmi 5 along with 100 GB of data. SBI credit card holders will also get an additional 5 percent discount on Amazon India and Mi.com while purchasing the device.

Let's compare the Redmi 5 with the top Android smartphones available in the market under Rs 8,000. It is hoping to emulate the Redmi 4's success with its next iteration. Xiaomi says that the Redmi 5 will offer a standby time of 17 days. While the Redmi Note 5 (or the Redmi 5 Plus) starts at around Rs 10,000 the Redmi 5 is cheaper still.
