Tiger Woods and Ernie Els Named Presidents Cup Captains

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els will reportedly duel in the Presidents Cup again, this time as captains for the biennial clash between United States and the Internationals in 2019.

Woods has played on eight Presidents Cup teams during his career but 2019 will mark his first since 2013.

Woods and Els are expected to be introduced as captains Tuesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Woods a 14-time major champion, and Els a twice victor of both the U.S. Open and Open Championship. The same could soon be said for the 2019 Presidents Cup, albeit without "assistant" in the title.

Back in 2003 at Fancourt, Woods had finished beating Els, 4 and 3, in singles, but the overall competition was tied, 17-17, at the end of regulation. I've always wanted to do it'.

The reason it is even a consideration now is due to Woods' surprising good play in his brief return to competition following spinal fusion surgery 11 months ago.

Woods' solid performance was further proof that the 14-time major victor is a force again after last April's spinal fusion surgery on his lower back, coming tantalisingly close to ending a five-year title drought.

At the top of the question list was whether either had given any thought to being playing captains. There's a long road ahead but should the 42-year-old continue to progress as he has, then he would feature highly among the points standings when the Presidents Cup rolls around next December. Woods recalled seeing a sea of red shirts - American players, family and friends - "this entire team right in my line.so I know if I miss, we lose".

"It's a home game for us, so we would like to think that we're going to have the majority of the support and the crowd can really get behind us a little bit more", he said.

"I'm excited about getting down there because it is a sports mad city, everyone loves their sport and they've really supported the Presidents Cup the last two times [in 1998 and 2011] I've played there as a player as well".

"And in doing so, they're likely going to be bringing forward future stars".

"It's just a matter of time before I put it all together".

So, expect some type of format change to reduce the number of points from 30 and minimize the American depth, plus perhaps other tweaks for which Els has lobbied.

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance.

Also, the top eight players for the worldwide and U.S. team standings will automatically qualify following completion of the 2019 Tour Championship. Each captain will now have four at-large picks, up from two - meaning eight players will automatically qualify following the Tour Championship.

This will be the third Presidents Cup to be held at venerable Royal Melbourne, designed by Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National.
