Serena Williams Confirms Her Official Comeback to Tennis

Serena Williams makes her return to the pro tour after a 14-month absence with a first-round match at the BNP Paribas Open today.

At 36, Williams is entering the twilight of her career, but the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion remains the benchmark her competitors must measure themselves by. A full schedule has not yet been released, but Williams' match will be a night match, so it should be part of the second block.

Her infant daughter Alexis Olympia and husband Alexis Ohanian were not in attendance. Following "a slew of heart complications" like swollen blood clots, and surgery to remove a hematoma, Williams still wanted to return for 2018 Australian Open, 3 months after she gave birth. She'll face Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas.

"I might not be at my best yet".

"I think Wimbledon are getting better with that - and I definitely applaud them - but there's obviously lots of progress all the tournaments could still be making".

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is back in action after giving birth to her son Alexis in September a year ago.

Also playing were elder sister Venus Williams, who has wrestled with the debilitating Sjogren's syndrome since 2011 but has remained within the elite ranks of tennis, and past year reached two Major finals plus the semis of another. "I'm glad you brought it up because I think it would be awesome".

Per Wilansky, Williams said: "I had a great time". "My comeback is here". Thursday, the day I play my very first match, marks International Women's Day. 7, and that all her tournaments will be in California and Florida. It marks her first WTA match since winning her 23rd Grand Slam in Melbourne past year.

She went on to discuss her brand new "S" pin that you can wear to support her! "Mine [are] Strong and Sure!"

The athlete recently revealed on Instagram that she created a gold-plated "S" pin that stands for the athlete's name, as well as "Strength" and 'Sureness'. "What would your "S" mean?" "Sooooo if you are watching me stop by the Serena booth to grab a "S" pin". She wrote, " I want this gold "S" to mean something special to you personally. "As long as I'm moving forward, even if it's at a turtle's pace, I'm OK with that".
