First reported by BuzzFeed, several Echo users on Twitter and Reddit have posted about virtually identical occurrences in which Alexa suddenly starts cackling without being told to do so by anyone.

Amazon has, however, taken note of the apparently startling issue.

Amazon responded to requests for comment by saying that the company was aware of the issue and is now "working to fix it".

"I was trying to turn off some lights and they kept turning back on".

They wrote: "After the third request, Alexa stopped responding and instead did an evil laugh. It sounded like a real person". Was he afraid? "There's a good chance I get murdered tonight", he added. One user suggested the issue likely stemmed from a misheard command or conversation that Alexa interpreted as a command.
