Samsung launches Samsung Max

"With Samsung Max, our users in every corner of the globe now have increased autonomy and control over their data usage and privacy in an era of rising security threats, fraudulent apps, and user profiling". The app will offer recommendations for ways to save data in order to extend your data plan as well as ensuring your privacy in public WiFi areas.

Samsung Max is effectively the same as Opera Max, though the Korean technology giant said that it will "improve" the data-saving and privacy-protection modes, and it has also given the interface and UX a bit of a spit shine. So if you've been happily using Opera Max on a non-Samsung device for the past six months, the next update that rolls out will render the app useless for you.

If you remember Opera Max, it was a great way to keep track of what apps were using data in the background and providing you with some level of privacy. It achieves this by compressing images and video as well as music files and web pages where possible. There will also be a Privacy Protection Mode that offers encryption, tracker blocking, and a DNS masking service.

Samsung stated that the app is designed taking the "popular features" from the company's "Make in India" program to offer "locally relevant and beneficial software and hardware".

As the name suggests, Data Saving Mode is all about helping you use less data and potentially save money with your wireless carrier bill.

To manage privacy, Samsung Max app provides a few security-specific features as well. Fear not the app works on non-Samsung devices as well. The app will come pre-installed on certain devices in developing nations including Argentine, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. But, it's worth noting that Samsung Max is available only for Samsung smartphones. Users of other Samsung devices - and people in other parts of the world - are able to download the app from Google Play. "Because of this, we are now introducing Samsung Max to our mid-range devices as an exclusive and unique service that sets Samsung devices apart from the rest of the smartphone market", said Seounghoon Oh, Vice President Samsung R&D Institute India.
