Morgan out, Chapman debuts; England bowl first

The visitors had won the toss and put New Zealand in to bat, leaving the skipper satisfied at his team's efforts on what appeared to be a challenging surface.

The New Zealanders are coming off three T20 losses and commentator Simon Doull has suggested Williamson and coach Mike Hesson step back from the T20 side.

England's mission at the Westpac Stadium and in Hamilton on Sunday is to defeat New Zealand twice and show they can be just as good in the Twenty20 game as they have been in 50-over cricket since last they were here. In response, Alex Hales gave England a flying start but Ish Sodhi removed him for an attacking 47 off 24 balls.

UNDERPERFORMING Australia T20 stand-in captain David Warner will be given a break to freshen up mentally before the next triangular series match in New Zealand.

"You can write what you like, that's fine", Williamson said.

England went into their game with New Zealand in Wellington having suffered two defeats to the Baggy Greens, but a 12-run setback against the Black Caps has left the tourists on the brink of finishing in last place.

Briefly England stemmed the rate after the fielding restrictions relaxed, but then Guptill and Williamson kicked on.

They effectively have two chances to book their spot in Auckland later this month, with one win from their next two games enough to edge England out. Instead, after misjudging a quick single, pushing the ball towards mid on, he saw fast bowler Mark Wood's hurl at the stumps at the non-strikers end fly narrowly past with Williamson still a couple of metres short of his crease.

Hales smashed pace bowler Trent Boult for 20 off his second over and eventually hit hit three sixes and six fours, including a huge hit over the boundary from a pull shot off the left-hander.

"We got a fantastic start". Chapman scored 20, while wicketkeeper Seifert hit two sixes in his six-ball innings of 14 to take the hosts to the equal highest Twenty20 worldwide score on the ground.

"I thought the ball was going to roll a bit further".

"It didn't look pretty but it played a lot better than that", said Williamson.

"It was nice to spend some time in the middle today to help our side get a good total".
