The case could have implications for the ongoing immigration debate in Congress over so-called Dreamers, young unauthorized immigrants whose fate is up for negotiation.
"State police investigators are working with US Federal Immigration Officials and they have placed a hold on Orrego-Savala". Indianapolis television station WRTV reported that Orrego-Savala told the judge through an interpreter: "I wasn't driving the auto".
Orrego-Savala was taken to the Marion County Jail, accused of driving without a license and on suspicion of intoxicated driving. The two more serious counts each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

When Orrego-Savala appeared before the judge he was assisted by an interpreter. Police say he slammed his Ford F-150 pickup into Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe as they were standing on the emergency shoulder of Interstate 70 in Indianapolis early Sunday morning.
"Drunk driving has nothing to do with immigration status". He had entered the USA illegally in July 2004 and he was convicted of driving under the influence in Redwood City, California, in 2005, ICE said.
Immigration officers first arrested Orrego-Savala in San Francisco in 2006, an ICE spokeswoman confirmed Monday evening. A federal immigration charge was filed against him Tuesday.

Authorities say Orrego-Savala, a citizen of Guatemala, was deported in 2007 and 2009. They recalled him as being caring and amusing.
Police say the 26-year-old Jackson and 54-year-old Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe were standing outside Monroe's vehicle along I-70 after Jackson became ill while Monroe was transporting him.
Both men were outside the auto when a black Ford F-150 drove into the shoulder and struck the vehicle, killing them both.
