Moon to put up a super celestial show today

In Southwest Virginia, we'll be able to see the super blue blood moon best on Wednesday morning. This unusual hue happens because when the moon is covered by Earth's shadow, some of the light from Earth's sunrises and sunsets falls on the moon and makes it appear red, at least from Earth, according to, a Live Science sister site.

"Weather permitting, the NASA TV broadcast will feature views from the varying vantage points of telescopes at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California; Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles; and the University of Arizona's Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter Observatory", NASA said in a statement.

NASA will be live-streaming the trifecta for those outside the USA, where stargazers on the west coast will get the best view. Supermoons generally only occur once every 14 months and will not happen again until January 2019.

SNOW: That's just one of the Native American nicknames for the second full moon of the year.

A super moon occurs when the full moon is at the closest point of its orbit to the Earth, which is also called the perigee.

A combination of nine pictures shows the moon turning orange during a total "supermoon" lunar eclipse in Brussels in September 28, 2015.

The next lunar eclipse will occur on July 27-28 and will be visible from India, the release said.

At 5:51 a.m., you should start to see the outer shadow of the moon will start to pass, turning a bit red and becoming slightly dimmer, "if you're insane enough to get up that early", McDowell said. As NASA explains, the super blue blood moon is made up of three special lunar events that rarely occur on the same day.

Totality ends at 6:07 a.m. and the moon is set to emerge from the umbra at 7:11 a.m PST. Since the Earth's shadow is larger than the moon, the eclipse will last for more than an hour, starting at 5:51 a.m. and ending at 7:07 a.m. The moon will pass in the earth's shadow.

A blue moon is not really blue. "In Tamil Nadu, the moon rising time is 6.04 pm and from that time we can witness this celestial event", he said. Around 5:48 a.m. we will see a partial eclipse of the moon.

The best view of the lunar eclipse 2018 in the United States will be along the West Coast.
