Mighty Mayfield can't propel Oklahoma to win in Rose Bowl

Oklahoma led Georgia, 31-17, at halftime of the College Football Playoff Rose Bowl semifinal on New Year's Day. A close, moderately high-scoring game into the fourth quarter, when Georgia pulls away on the strength of its lines and running backs.

Lorenzo Carter blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt by Austin Seibert on the first possession of the second overtime.

The national championship game is January 8 in Atlanta.

Despite giving up 31 points in the first half, more than Georgia had allowed in any of its first 13 games, the Butkus Award victor led a resilient defensive response in the Rose Bowl on Monday night and finished with a team-leading 11 tackles.

The Bulldogs (12-1) rode that stifling defense to the program's first Southeastern Conference championship since 2005 - a familiar formula for second-year head coach Kirby Smart, who is actually making his third appearance in the playoff. There was a lot more on the line in this one, the first CFP game to go to overtime as well.

Chubb and Michel, both seniors, combined for 326 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

"I made plays. I gave up plays".

That still left the Bulldogs down by two touchdowns, but they got one of them back on their first offensive play of the second half, when Nick Chubb bolted 50 yards for a touchdown. "We knew each and every blow we took in the first half was going to pay off for us in the second half". "My team just had faith in me", said Michel, who did all that damage on just 11 carries and got a hug from former Bulldogs great tailback Garrison Hearst after scoring the winning TD.

Despite being sidelined earlier this week due to an illness, it seems like one Sooner star is getting motivated for the Rose Bowl.

On the next series, Oklahoma cornerback Steven Parker returned a Michel fumble 46 yards for a touchdown to put the Sooners up 45-38 with 6:52 left.

Smith said the Bulldogs played with more passion in the second half. Seibert responded with a 33-yard field goal for Oklahoma.

"It's just the competitive nature that's in us that keeps us pushing each other to be better", he said.

Oklahoma won its third consecutive Big 12 title on Saturday with a 41-17 victory over TCU, punctuating an incredible debut season for Riley, the youngest coach in the FBS at 34 years old. OR scored 41 points in the secondhalf of the 2014 season's Rose Bowl semifinal against Florida State. Georgia freshman quarterback Jake Fromm completed 20 of 29 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
