High-speed chase ends in head-on collision in Arizona

A one hour long high speed police chase in the Phoenix area ended when the suspect's vehicle collided head on with another auto. Mitchell Timothy Taebel, 31, climbed out of the overturned SUV waved his arms and yelled at bystanders, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Most of the chase was on freeways, including Interstate 10, and at normal driving speeds as troopers tailed the SUV from a distance and a law enforcement helicopter flew overhead. "One of our sergeants attempted a traffic stop on a red Jeep SUV, northbound on SR 85 at MP 138, which is north of the prison and south of MC 85". Officials in contact with the suspect during the chase indicated that he claimed to be a "sovereign citizen" not bound by government laws.

The chase then continued briefly before the suspect slammed head-on into another vehicle, causing a major collision that witnesses couldn't miss.

The chase ended in Tempe, Arizona when Tabel's auto slammed into another vehicle head-on and, as seen on helicopter video obtained by CNN, was shrouded in a cloud of smoke. He then drove into oncoming traffic and slammed head on into another vehicle near an intersection.

After weaving through traffic at high speed, Taebel eventually met his match: an vehicle heading in the opposite direction, which he rammed into head on, sending his SUV flipping through the air.

Some witnesses in the area even interacted briefly with the suspect as troopers began to surround him.

Police took him into custody.
