Captain Marvel Adds She's Gotta Have It Star

DeWanda Wise has just been added to the cast in a now unnamed but "plum" supporting role in the movie. Fans are already speculating that the role will be Monica Rambeau, a.k.a. Spectrum. If so, this would increase the importance of Wise's character exponentially, leading to (my) speculation that she could only be playing a well-known comic book character.

The plot follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

The actress joins a cast that includes Brie Larson in the title role, Samuel L. Jackson reprising his Marvel cinematic universe role as Nick Fury, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn as the film's villain. She is considered the first Captain Marvel.

Everything is coming up roses for Wise, with a continuing series and major role in the Marvel's Captain Marvel feature. In the comics, Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau share a love/love/hate relationship but hold a substantial amount of mutual respect for one another.

Now, if that's not starting 2018 with a bang, we don't know what is.

Captain Marvel is a Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel of sorts, taking place in the 1990s. As of now, excluding Black Panther, Wise will be one of the only non-alien women of color in the MCU. And Marvel isn't shy with making sure they populate each of their standalone movies with as many relevant members of a heroes' supporting cast as they can.

Fans are already speculating who Wise is playing, but it is hard to tell. Just excited to see DeWanda getting more big roles?
