"We have a lot of illnesses that are flu-like that come with the pain, fever and the cough", Dr. Derrick Anderson said. They showed that when a vaccine is considered effective, 1.2 percent of vaccinated people had the flu, while 3.9 percent of unvaccinated people had the flu.

The study authors note that these new estimates are limited to flu-associated respiratory deaths and therefore may underestimate the true global impact of seasonal influenza. "Anyone with an underlying condition, especially someone with lung issues like COPD or asthma, those people are at a really high risk for severe complications from the flu".

Cases of students with flu-like symptoms were worse between Thanksgiving and Christmas break, a nursing supervisor with the Boise district said.
