Opening weekend proves the power of the force

It is an out-of-this-world performance for the eighth chapter in the Star Wars movie series.

While some would chalk it off to the film being a divisive Star Wars sequel trilogy installment, there are some sites wondering whether the low user score of The Force Awakens' sequel has been artificially influenced by individuals looking to bring the film down. I made it all the way to seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi without being spoiled, and that's an accomplishment in and of itself.

It's the second-highest Thursday night preview tally following the $57 million start for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which kicked off this modern trilogy in 2015.

The Last Jedi's open also compares well to last year's Star Wars movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, whose opening weekend of December 16-18 earned $155.1 million domestically.

The question was how big of one.

It is the last film by actress Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), who passed away in 2016.

The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, a star in his own right, was also the first Star Wars movie pushed through Walt Disney's vaunted marketing system. With global grosses hitting $230 million, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" totaled $450 million worldwide.

There are a number of threads online in which netizens are trying to tear down The Last Jedi, asking others to "hit back at Disney". As part of the deal, Disney will take control of 20th Century Fox, one of Hollywood's six major studios.

Coco, another animated release from Disney, ranked third, taking in US$10 million for a four-week domestic total of US$150.8 million.
