Google launches lighter Android Oreo (Go edition) for entry level devices

The company has also released lightweight "Go" versions of its popular apps including Youtube Go, Google Maps Go, and Gmail Go that take up 50 percent less space than their full-sized counterparts.

"There are 230 million Indian language users online on Google today and 170 million of them are using messaging service". With Google Assistant for Android (Go edition), Google said people will be able to quickly send messages, make calls or set alarms, with their voice and a single touch of the screen.

In Android Go, the Google Play Store offers a streamlined experience, showcasing Go-optimized apps that won't impact storage space or run slowly, and phones are also protected with Google's Play Protect, which is now a standard security feature in all Android Oreo devices.

Remember Android Go? In May, Google announced it would be making a scaled-down version of Android to run on entry-level devices with between 1GB and 512MB of RAM.

"India is the world's largest two-wheeler market and the navigation needs of these millions of riders are different from automobile drivers". Two-wheeler mode in Maps gives routes that use shortcuts not accessible to cars.

The app can also get all unpaid bills from a biller. As you use the app more, it'll fine-tune its suggestions, Google says.

The two-wheeler mode will arrive in more countries later, Google said.

Announcing The Google Assistant for the JioPhone, Gummi Hafsteinsson, Product Management Director said, "For the first time ever globally, the Google Assistant will be available on a feature phone".

The Google Assistant for JioPhone will be available in English and Hindi. Phone Arena compiled a quick changelog of the new features available in Android 8.1. At a Google For India 2017 press conference, the company said it's finally launching Android Go alongside the updated version of Android Oreo, Android 8.1 Oreo.

Google Go is light on storage and data and works efficiently on patchy connections. The company said most "Go" apps run an average of 15-percent faster than the normal versions.

Since its launch, Hotstar, the first Indian app to cross 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store, has racked up multiple industry accolades such as Apple TV's App of the Year and has been featured on every list of India's most downloaded apps.

The company also brought bill payment facilities on its digital payment app "Tez". At launch, it will support over 70 billers, including national and state electricity providers, gas and water, and DTH recharge.

Tuesday onwards, the app supports bill payments for Tata Power, Airtel, ACT, DishTV, DoCoMo, and other utility providers.

"Tez" has processed over 140 million transactions from almost 12 million active users.
