Eddie The Eagle director Dexter Fletcher signs up to make Queen film

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Singer's firing came after growing tensions between the director and star Rami Malek over Singer's frequent absences.

Bohemian Rhapsody is still slated for a December 28th, 2018 release.

Fletcher was originally attached to direct the film, with Ben Whishaw ("Skyfall") in the role of legendary rocker Mercury.

The studio, which has about two more weeks of principal photography remaining on the film, is expected to name a new director within the next few days. It has also been revealed that he and star Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury, did not get along very well.

According to people with knowledge of the incident, cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel had to step in numerous time when Bryan Singer failed to show up on set.

In a statement issued through his lawyer, Singer said he had asked for time off to deal with a "pressing" family matter.

"I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones first", Singer said in a statement, The Wrap reported. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services.

By the early 2010s he was transitioning into directorial duties, steering 2011 prison parolee fatherhood drama Wild Bill, a 2013 adaptation of award-winning musical Sunshine on Leith and 2016 ski-jumping comedy biopic Eddie the Eagle, the last of which was distributed by Fox.

Filming has been taking place in the United Kingdom, with Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello and Gwilym Lee starring as Queen's other members.
