Calling for ballot papers to be brought back, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Saturday said that if EVMs are not used, BJP can not come to power.
"Interestingly, where the polls were conducted through EVMs, the victory percentage of BJP was 46 but where it was carried through ballots, it was 15 per cent,"he said".
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also accused the BJP of resorting to EVM related malpractices and demanded that the 2019 general elections be held through ballot papers.
As per the latest counting updates, the BJP is leading in 14 of the 16 mayoral seats in the state.
Uttam said had Akhilesh Yadav campaigned extensively, the results would have been much different and the BJP would have been wiped out in the urban body polls. "If polls are not held through ballot papers, then democracy will die in India", said Mr. Singh. Senior Congress leader Deepak Singh said at Lucknow that the results itself explain that the BJP's mandate in the urban local body elections had decreased, while the vote share of the Congress had gone up. The BSP managed to bag two mayoral seats of Aligarh and Meerut but the Samajwadi Party and the Congress drew a blank.More news: Ending the weekend with warm and cloudy conditions

Mayawati's remarks came a day after her party came second to the BJP in the civic body polls held in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party too won a clear majority in 2012 Assembly poll and EVMs were used in the elections, " argued Pandey.
Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday took to Twitter to show that the BJP has won only in areas where EVMs were used.
The Congress which once again failed to make a mark also compared the performance of the ruling party where elections were held through EVMs with those where ballot papers were used.
The BJP, however, termed "baseless" the allegations of opposition parties pertaining to the misuse of official machinery. Party MLC Rajpal Kashyap said, "It was disheartening to note that the BJP gained on places where EVMs were used". In Nagar Panchayat elections, BJP won 100 seats of presidents as against the SP's 83, BSP's 45 and Cong's 17 while winning 664 seats of members as against SP's 453, BSP's 218 and Cong's 126.
