Three Coffees a Day Brings More Health than Harm, According to Study


Guallar says doctors should not recommend drinking coffee to prevent disease and people should not start drinking coffee to improve health.

It contains a number of wonder compounds which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic properties which scientists believe might explain why drinkers experience lower rates of chronic liver disease and liver cancer.

There was less evidence for the effects of drinking decaffeinated coffee, but it had similar benefits, they said.

Dr Poole and researchers from the University of Edinburgh reviewed 201 studies that had aggregated data from observational research and 17 studies that collected statistics from clinical trials.

The BMJ said that to three to four cups of coffee a day is categorised as a moderate intake - 400mg or less per day.

Drinking as many as seven cups a day was found to be beneficial.

However, they say drinking coffee in pregnancy may be associated with harms, and may be linked to a very small increased risk of fracture in women.

Folks who drink multiple cups of coffee per day are less likely to have risks of premature death and heart disease than those who don't drink coffee at all, researchers concluded on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

"Umbrella reviews" synthesize previous pooled analyses to give a clearer summary of diverse research on a particular topic.

"Coffee drinking appears safe within usual patterns of consumption", the researchers concluded in their study, published in the British Medical Journal on November 22.

"That said, our results suggest moderate coffee drinking - up to around three cups per day - is not detrimental to your health, and that incorporating coffee into your diet could have health benefits".

Further research may now be needed to determine whether the relationship highlighted by this study is a causal one.

Experts said it is the largest ever study looking at coffee consumption and health.

While its consumption is still linked to harm in pregnancy, it has shown "beneficial associations" with rates of Parkinson's disease and depression.
