The suspect Lopez is staying illegally in the United States and is from El Salvadoran said the Immigration officers.

Police said they tried to locate Lopez-Abrego after that interview but could not until he was found November 4 in North Carolina with two other reported MS-13 gang members from the Washington area.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released a statement addressing Lopez-Abrego's legal status in the country. The informant told police that Lopez-Abrego was the first person to stab the victim, thrusting a 15-inch knife into the chest.

The man was also wearing black sweatpants with blue athletic shorts underneath them when police recovered his body along with a rosary or necklace.
The investigation shows that the MS-13 gang, which was founded by El Salvadoran immigrants, was behind the murder.
The ultra-violent Latino street gang works as an umbrella grouping of units, some of which are larger and more violent than others.
MS-13 is a "transnational criminal organization" engaged in such crimes as drug trafficking, kidnapping, human smuggling, prostitution, murder and extortion.
