Dr. Yves Jalbert of the Quebec public health agency said the flu shot is strongly recommended for children from six to 23 months old, anyone with a chronic disease, pregnant women, and people above age 60.

It's true that the effectiveness of the flu vaccine fluctuates from year to year and that it's less effective than other vaccines because flu viruses rapidly evolve.

The flu started circulating in Clark County a little earlier than usual a year ago, with activity picking up at the end of October.

Patty Quinlisk, says the first flu-related death of the season was an elderly central Iowa man, who died earlier this month.

Uninsured individuals can expect to pay $25 for a regular dose flu shot and $55 for a high dose vaccine for those who are ages 65 or older.

Why this is happening is hard to say, particularly when more than 80 per cent of the workers in the region's long-term care homes were vaccinated last flu season. Vulnerable people can also be hospitalized. Symptoms include sore throat, cough, runny nose, fever, head and muscle aches, fatigue and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. However, different viruses are responsible for the two illnesses, and the flu is more serious than a cold. Treatment generally consists of antiviral medication.

Later this month, the hospital will begin efforts to immunize community members and hospital visitors - and just in time for flu season to pick up, if past years are any indication.
