The 16 days of activism encompass other significant dates: International Women Human Rights Defenders Day on November 29, World AIDS Day on December 1, and December 6: The National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence Against Women, which commemorates the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre at l'École Polytechnique in 1989.
The UN mission in Afghanistan stressed that alongside the effective legal and institutional mechanisms for access to justice, stopping violence against women requires an effort from all of us, from every individual, to speak out against violence in homes, workplaces and social settings. We are also grateful to Ontario's Roundtable on Violence Against Women and the Executive and Provincial Committees to End Violence Against Indigenous Women for their invaluable and ongoing advice.
The Ministry of Family and Social Policies reported that over 80 percent of women in the country have encountered some kind of physical or psychological violence from a family member, while one out of 15 girls has been sexually harassed at least once in her lifetime. This included the introduction of new laws, such as the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act and the Protection from Harassment Act, as well as enhancements to the Women's Charter to provide greater protection for women. "And it exposed how a culture of entitlement, where there are no consequences for sexual crimes, has left many women tormented in silence". Frameworks that include a specific target for ending violence against women and girls, offer huge promise but must be adequately funded in order to bring real and significant changes in the lives of women and girls.More news: Meyer calling for "all-out investigation" after JT Barrett injury
