Now however, THR has the news that former Chuck star Zachary Levi has been cast as the lead in Shazam! Zachary Levi, who amusing enough plays a part in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, has been cast as Captain Marvel, or as he's more prominently known these days after a few lawsuits: Shazam.
The photo has Levi in a costume that looks like an updated version of Shazam's classic outfit complete with the flowing white cape, though this imagining appears to have more bronze-toned accents rather than the hero's more familiar gold touches.
The character first appeared in Whiz Comics back in 1940 and was the most popular superhero of that decade, outselling even Superman. It also didn't take long for Levi to express his gratitude to the fan community as well as his appreciation for DC as a whole. Shazam! is set to start filming in Toronto in February 2018. He has also starred in TV series Chuck and Tangled. The $15 million horror sequel has earned a big $303 million worldwide since opening in August. DC later officially renamed the character "Shazam" when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011. Shazam! is now set for an April 2019 release. That being the case, the young actor playing Billy Batson still needs to be cast.More news: 'Alarming Study' on Chemicals in Baby Food Lacks Evidence

Sandberg is directing Shazam! from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. The film will not tie into any of the other DCEU films, and there will be no appearances by other DCEU franchise characters. Sandberg confirmed the film's April 2019 release on Reddit.
Though a live-action feature has been in various forms of development over the past 17 years, DC And New Line revealed earlier this year that they were pushing forward with a two-movie Shazam! film.
