The Englishman was overtaken by Verstappen early in the race and proved unable to match the Dutch driver's speed, ultimately coming home ahead of the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo. I was very happy when I crossed the line and, together with my dad, I got this far.

The final Petronas Malaysia Formula 1 Grand Prix race went out with the kind of bang it deserved. "At the beginning I had hoped I could finish second but then after the pit stop it was just about holding on to third", he said.

Hamilton seemed nearly certain to significantly extend his lead at the top of the championship, but a combination of his own lack of pace and Vettel's relentless charge into the top four reduced the impact of the qualifying no-show.

"I didn't expect to win here and be faster than the Mercedes but I think the whole weekend we looked pretty decent", Verstappen said. "It is a fact that some races the vehicle has worked out to be better but overall globally we have not got the best auto and we have done an exceptional job with what we have".

"Suzuka should be a good circuit, but of course we will have more penalties".

Despite Vettel's effort, Lewis Hamilton extends his lead to 34 points in the World Drivers' Championship.

In one of the most freaky endings to an F1 race, Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll collide after the chequered flag, wrecking the German's rear left side.

Vettel's Ferrari teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, didn't even start despite qualifying second.

"I did not really know how close Max was and I was having some problems with the auto and was struggling with battery power", said the Brit. But, as title rival Vettel battled his way forward from the back, Hamilton did not have it all his own way and was soon reeled in and passed by Verstappen at the start of lap four. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was on the hunt for some Red Bull the entire race with his new-spec engine in place, although his attempts were thwarted after the team informed him of some unusual engine temps and asked him to back off the throttle and hold his position.

'We need to see now what the problem was.

"I don´t really know where the pole lap came from, I surprised myself", admitted Hamilton.

"You could see in the first two laps, he could stay with Lewis [Hamilton], you could see that we had the grip", Jos said. We appreciate you guys having us and all the support you've given us.
