Gujarat CM demands Ahmed Patel's resignation over alleged link to IS suspect

The Sardar Patel Hospital, in a quick rebuttal by its trustee Jayesh Patel, rejected the allegation via a press note and said: "Deliberate attempts were being made by certain quarters to tarnish the image of the hospital and that of Congress leader Ahmed Patel".

"The allegations are baseless", Patel had said, even as the Congress dared the Centre to investigate the matter.

"Narendra Patel's claim about the Rs 1 crore offer and release of an audio clip on his conversation with former PAAS member Varun Patel prove how BJP is indulging in cheap politics to win Gujarat polls by trying to bribe opposition leaders", Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said.

Party chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said the BJP is "staring at defeat" and is, therefore, making baseless allegations against Patel, who won a hard-fought Rajya Sabha election in August. "Ahmed Patel was a trustee of a hospital, I believe he resigned or retired in 2015". They also don't hold any office of profit in the hospital. "Let's not divide peace loving Gujaratis while fighting terrorism". Stimberwala was arrested by the Gujarat ATS on October 25 - a day after being relieved from his job at the hospital - from Ankleshwar railway station in Bharuch district.

"Terror suspect's link to hospital is a serious issue".

Later, when asked how the party meant to accommodate the Patidar demand for reservation, former state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia said the party would reserve 20 per cent for poor candidates in the economically backward caste category - without affecting the reservation quota for SCs, STs and OBCs - and that Patidars would be accommodated there. It's a matter of national security. Tweeting in Hindi, the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader said, "3/11/2017 tak congress patidar ko samvedhanik aarakshan kaise degi, uss mudde par apna stand clear kar de nahin toh Amit Shah jaisa mamla Surat mein hoga (By November 3, the Congress should make clear their stand on how they plan to give reservation to Patidars as per the Constitution or else, they will face what Amit Shah faced in Surat)". People are questioning Ahmed Patel's link to IS operatives.

Naqvi claimed that Congress had a history of favouring anti-national elements.

"We would like to know how terrorist Dawood Ibrahim's wife visited Mumbai in March 2016 without the Maharashtra government or the intelligence agencies getting a whiff of it?" the Congress leader asked.
